2008 Makahiki Tournament
Makahiki: [ Mah Kah Hee’ Kee ] In the Hawaiian language, the word Makahiki means “year”. The Makahiki season was the Hawaiian New Year. It was a holiday covering four consecutive lunar months. The people stopped work, made offerings to the king, and then spent time practicing sports, feasting, dancing, and having a good time. War during this time was kapu or forbidden.
In honor of Hawaii and its past culture our Makahiki tournament will run during peak pelagic season. As the sport grows it will be important for all participants to show sportsmanship, respect for all in the water, and to take care of our delicate natural resources. Please don’t litter in the ocean and pick up all your litter when leaving the beach. If we all can do our part we can influence those after us. Remember the gods are watching, mahalo.
Starts on Feb 1, 2008 Ends on September 30, 2008
The Makahiki (yearly) Tournament is our most prestigious contest. You will be fishing vs. the best yak fisherman Oahu has to offer. Overall knowledge and skill will be tested as we compete around the island. Over 8 months you will be able to choose your OWN open fishing dates to accumulate points. Whether you are a weekend warrior or training during the Kanaka Ikaika you select which days will count. At the end of the tournament the Hunter with the most cumulative points will be declared our inaugural Champion. Winners will be honored at a banquet with trophy and prizes. Registration is open all year. And please my braddahs, no cheat!
