Devin Hallingstad has also caught a pelagic trifecta and a sailfish as he tries to keep pace with Andy. This looks to be the early duel as the rest of the field is just starting to warm up. Though Aloha Gannon and the Uyedas Brothers catches are early evidence that the mahis are coming in. Has anyone seen the "Hammah"?
The Rec division was the main attraction of the season thus far as Makahiki noob Rob Wong Yuen came firing on all cylinders catching a sailfish and ono on his first day. He backed that up with a 47# shibi on his next outing. Uku master, Alexander Budge is holding well at second place over Jay Schmidt and his ulua catch. Mahi Master Josh Dela Cruz is on their heels after landing a last minute 32# bull mahimahi. Weather wise, it was a windy and rainy month for most with a few select days to get out. The Winter waves should continue into March so be careful getting out there. It seems that the whales are now on their way out but a few are still lingering.
The Hammah has been sighted! Chris Paglinawan is the only diver to have claimed anyday this season. Both days have turned out to be onos catches leaving all comers chasing. But eventually Chris will start fishing more than diving and give the other divers a chance to rack up some points. Looks to be a small cast but talented none the less again! Good luck and dive safe AH divers!
Every season there will be an incident or two regarding rescue and this year is no exception. We hope Jon Jons story will be a reminder to all kayak anglers about making the right decisions on the ocean when observing weather to go out. If you need help from a boater dont hesitate, make the move right away. Also, contrary to what may have been advised, when your choosing a rescue whistle select a plastic marine whistle, plastic prevents your whistle from corroding. Marine whistles come in a high pitch design for an emergency during high winds.
Its a long way to the banquet fellas keep on truckin! We look forward to reporting the March catches, good luck and stay safe. Aloha.
